In 1982, colleagues Keith Riches and Ian McKay took the decision to resign from their roles as management for a national radiator company and go it alone.
The outcome was Advanced Radiators Limited, a radiator repair shop for automotive, truck and heavy plant machinery in Newcastle upon Tyne. With Keith and Ian’s drive and determination, combined with an incredibly skilled workforce, Advanced soon became the leading radiator repair shop in the North East of England.
Vehicle registration made up plates and components were another part to the business, to which becoming a DVLA registered supplier allowed Advanced to supply garages, motor factors, car dealers, body shops and retail alike.
Throughout the 90’s the company continued to grow locally and introduced new services such as steel and aluminium welding, which allowed our workshop to repair fuel tanks, intercoolers and oil coolers successfully.
In the late 90’s, Keith’s youngest son Philip joined the business. It was around this time when Keith and Ian identified a shift in radiators becoming available and more cost effective as a new boxed product, rather than an old fashioned re-core. With this in mind, Philip took it up on his shoulders to improve the company’s manual processes and implemented an efficient computer based stock control and accounting system. This newly designed system combined with a comprehensive computer based catalogue for brand new radiators, allowed the company to move with the times and essentially gave us the platform for where we are today. Philip, alongside key staff members and an offsite media company worked to launch our first website in 2000, where we started to sell our new boxed radiators nationwide.
In 2001, Keith’s eldest son Mark joined the business and was set the task of learning and developing all aspects of vehicle air conditioning and climate control systems for automotive, truck and heavy plant machinery. This new service was deemed a natural addition to our current engine cooling business and an integral part of our vision to become a multi department cooling centre. Through many years of experience and skilled engineers who trained under Mark’s supervision, we are now one of the leading air conditioning specialists in the UK.
With their own areas of the company continuing to grow, Philip and Mark could now get more involved with the day to day running of the business and let Keith and Ian deservedly sit back a little. After a long successful career in the industry Ian retired in 2007, to which at this stage the Riches family bought the McKay family’s 50% share of the company.
The Internet developed into a tremendous selling tool, to which having an effective website and comprehensive catalogue became key to our day to day operation. As competition in our boxed unit product increased, we decided to only procure a first fit product at competitive prices, rather than be dragged in to a price war nationwide. We spent years putting together a group of suppliers who can not only cover our car and truck range, but also we trust with regard to quality of product and packaging. Above all, we have spent a lot of time ironing out all fitment related issues by meticulously inspecting each product, using our knowledge of "what is inside the box" gained by years of not just selling a "cardboard box".
As more and more vehicles and heavy plant machinery came fitted with air conditioning/climate control and turbo systems, we started to procure brand new air conditioning parts and turbo intercoolers to complement our current engine cooling range of radiators. With Keith and Ian being so astute over the years and running a very successful business model, this allowed Philip and Mark to invest in the huge stock range required, to get to where we are today offering first fit quality products at competitive prices.
Now with Philip and Mark as Company Directors and a dedicated team working alongside them, the business has a very strong presence nationwide selling brand new aftermarket engine cooling, vehicle air conditioning and performance parts and has a reputation second to none for its quality and level of service.
In the past couple of years Philip and Mark took the decision to invest heavily in to our workshop facility, to further enhance what Keith and Ian started back in 1982. Advanced is now bringing in work from all over the UK to be repaired in our workshop and recently started to export to various Mining customers worldwide.
Advanced Radiators Limited is incredibly proud to be a family business and one of only a few radiator repair shops still operating in the UK. With continued hard work, as well as the constant desire to introduce new services and grow, we believe the businesses future is bright.
